What you are doing in 5 years

In the winter of 1976, I was 19 years old, working in the shutter laboratory of space shuttle in NASA while majoring in computer in Huston University nearby. Though my study, rest and work occupied most of my 24 hours, I concentrated on my music composition if had even one minute spare.

I was not accomplished in writing lyrics, therefore I was finding a partner who was good at it during those days, and was acquainted with Valerie Johnson. Since left Texas twenty years before, I haven’t heard about her any more, but she gave me the greatest courage when my career begins. 19 years old young as Valarie was, she got a lot of prizes. Her works made me fondle admiringly. In those days, we had collaborated on many great works, which were thought full of originality and characteristics now.

A Saturday in weekend, Valerie passionately invited me to her pasture for barbecue. Her family was a famous petroleum magnate in Texas. Although her family was very wealthy, her dress, car and sincerity to others earned my admiration more.

Visualize,What you are doing in five years?﹙想象你五年后在做什么?﹚我愣了一下。

Valerie knew my persistence in music, but in the face of and industry, we had no access to the far kingdom of music and strange disc market of American. We sat in the countryside of Taxes wondered how to take the first step. Suddenly, she asked:
“Visualize, what you are doing in five years?” I was dull for seconds. Then, she faced around, pointed me: “Hey, tell me what your best hope is after five years, what is your life?”

She continued before I answered: “Don’t hurry, think carefully before you are confident to tell me. After few minutes’ consideration, I told her:

Firstly, I hope I have a popular disc marketed and accepted by many people.

Secondly, I wanna live in a place full of music, and work with the world’s top musicians every day.

“Are you sure?” Valarie asked. “Yessssss!” I replied slowly and quietly. Then she continued: “Ok, if you are sure, let’s inverse your goal backward.”

“If you wanna market your first disc in the fifth year, you need to sign up with a music company in the fourth year.”
“And, you should have a complete works in the third year.”
“So, in the second year, you will start to record your music.”
“In the first year, you must prepare all of your works composed and well rehearsed for recording.”
“Thus, you have to decorate unfinished songs for selection within the sixth month.”
“And your songs should be completed in the first month.”
Above all, you have to make a list for songs which need embellishment and which should be finished during your first week.”

“Now, we know what you need to do next week.” She smiled, “Well, anyway, you said you wanna live with many musicians in fifth year, right?” she added immediately.

“If you were working with these people in fifth year, you should own a workroom or recording studio in fourth year, and you should work with them in third year. Thus, you should live in New York or Los Angles not Texas.”

In the next year, 1977, I resigned the enviable job in NASA and moved from Houston to Los Angles. It was strange that about five or six years later, in 1983, my discs became popular in Asia, and I was busy working with many top musicians day and night.

Whenever I am confused I will get down to ask myself: what do you hope you are doing after five years? If you even don’t know your answer, how do you hope the God or others help you to make choice?

Don’t forget that, in our life God has already bestowed the liberty to choose upon us! When you ask yourself: “why should be this?” or “why should be that?” You might as well ask yourself, have you ever known “clearly” about what do you want?
